RESIDENTS are being reminded to take steps to ensure Barrhead and Neilston's homes and businesses are protected this winter.

Scottish Water is urging customers to follow the companies' winter code, the key message of which is to be prepared and take steps to make sure you heat, insulate and protect your pipes.

Other measures include leaving your heating on at a low setting, having someone who can keep an eye for any problems if you are going away or turning off your water supply altogether.

Knowing where the stop valve is and keeping your insurance documents along with the details of a licensed plumber somewhere secure and water-tight as well as looking out for vulnerable neighbours is also encouraged.

Last year's unprecedented winter, which included the coldest December on record, saw Scottish Water having to repair around 2000 burst pipes and answering more than 40,000 calls between Christmas Eve and New Year, when only 7500 calls would normally be expected.

Scottish Water's Customer Service Delivery Director, Peter Farrer, said: "Unfortunately, many customers found out last year that the real problems start when temperatures begin to rise again after such a cold snap. This can lead to pipes expanding and bursting."
